Some of the Ambassablog’s most popular posts were written before 2010. Ambassabloggers’ posts have staying power! So look for more coverage on some of those topics again.

Hats off to all the Ambassabloggers and guest employee bloggers who helped fill those four container ships with great material about life at San Diego International Airport.

Here’s to an even more successful 2011 for the Ambassablog.

Have you checked out SDIA on Flickr yet? There are lots of cool photos there, including shots like this of the San Diego Children’s Choir performing for passengers on December 23.

Have You Been Naughty or Nice?

That's me (Suzanne) to the left of Santa, and my colleague René to the right.

Now’s the perfect time to ask Santa yourself!

Visit the “Holiday Photos on the Fly” kiosk located just west of the Southwest Airlines ticket counters in Terminal One, lower level.  You can’t miss Jolly ole St. Nick on his red velvet throne, waiting to pose with you and your loved ones for a free holiday picture.

The Airport Authority’s advertising concessionaire, JC Decaux, is facilitating this holiday kiosk, in conjunction with Southwest Airlines and Microsoft Windows 7.

Passengers are greeted by a Windows Elf who explains the process, snaps a picture, and then assists with editing and printing a photo … all for free!  Passengers also have the opportunity to email the photos to themselves, allowing for a cost-effective, eco-friendly holiday greeting distribution to family and friends. You’ll even receive a $20 off coupon on your next Southwest Airlines flight (restrictions apply).

Check out the sample photo above. There I am with my colleague René, manager of the airport’s advertising program. She’s the one that made this all happen. Thanks René!

“Holiday Photos on the Fly” with Mr. Claus … now available in Terminal One from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from December 17 – 20.

Seasons Greetings everyone!

Guest Post: Do Not Fear – SANMasters Is Here!

by Sharon, Marketing Department

Delivering a public speech is not easy. In fact, some studies show that

Amiel delivering his big speech.

three out of every four individuals suffer from speech anxiety (or fear of talking in front of a crowd). During San Diego International Airport’s Employee Appreciation Event this year, under cheers and loud applause, Amiel, the newly awarded President’s Award of Excellence (Employee of the Year) recipient and SANMasters member, stood before a large crowd to deliver his acceptance speech.

The ability to have the courage to stand and deliver a well-organized speech is extremely important to airport employees. Many employees might stay away from taking on a task, leadership position, or asking a critical question because they don’t want to speak out in front of a crowd or deliver a speech.

In 2008, the airport brought in Toastmasters International, an organization dedicated to help people become more confident public speakers. A chartered chapter of the club was formed at the airport, called SANMasters. SANMasters is part of Toast Masters District 5.

Club members attend meetings with the common goals of growing in their ability to deliver quality speeches and encouraging other members to do the same.

From left, Scott, Amiel, Murray & Elsie of the Airport Authority's Landside Operations Department celebrate Amiel being named Airport Authority Employee of the Year for 2010 at the Employee Appreciation Event.

Each meeting has a theme and features two speeches, as well as “Table Topics” – that’s when a group of questions related to the meeting’s theme are asked, and different club members are then encouraged to spontaneously answer. This teaches members to think on their feet, often producing a variety of answers, some of which are pretty funny.

Meetings also includes rotating leadership roles, which allows each member to take on a different responsibility at each meeting. New members start with the smaller roles and then progress to eventually take on the role of Toast Master, the meeting’s Master of Ceremonies. Don’t worry though if this seems scary, as the progression usually takes a while and you’re never forced into a role until you feel ready – you’re only encouraged.

Airport Authority President/CEO Thella Bowens recognizes Amiel as the Airport Authority's Employee of the Year for 2010.

SANMasters is very proud to have this year’s President’s Award of Excellence recipient, Amiel, as a member. I recently spoke with him about his participation in SANMasters. Amiel became a member of of the club because he wanted to become a more effective oral communicator. Since joining in January 2010, he feels he has grown in his confidence when talking in front of large groups.

A SANMasters meeting in session.

“What I like most about SANMasters is the way you become part of a team, and that each member encourages other members to improve and succeed,” said Amiel, who works in the Airport Authority’s Landside Operations Department. When asked what he felt airport employees would gain by  joining SANMasters, Amiel said “they’d develop and improve their speaking skills, for every occasion, and being a member also helps you become a better listener.”

This special guest post was submitted by Sharon in the Marketing Department (above).

SANMasters is open to all employees and also non-employee San Diego County residents. The group meets every other Thursday during lunch, from Noon – 1 pm. If you’re interested in learning more about the club, please join us at our next meeting. Or, for more info or to attend a meeting as a welcomed guest, please contact me, SANMasters Vice President of Public Relations, at 619-400-2873.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!

There’s construction work to be had at SDIA

If you are a local small business in the construction industry and motivated to learn, there may be work for you at the San Diego International Airport.

JJ Hawes Inc., a small general contracting firm with 11 employees, can attest to that. Owner Jess Hawes registered with The Green Build in 2009. He took advantage of programs offered by the Airport Authority’s Small Business Development team and attended the Turner School of Construction Management (TSCM). Both programs are intended to help small businesses grow their business capacities.

A two-month course hosted at the Airport Authority, TSCM helps prepare small and emerging local businesses to take on larger jobs.  The courses are taught mainly by Turner’s senior management. It also includes an introduction to the programs offered by Small Business Development to help small and disadvantaged local businesses gain work at the airport. Finally, it provides a unique opportunity to network with other local contractors.

Jess says the course “created a new life experience.” He worked diligently to learn the ins and outs of working with the airport and successfully bid as a subcontractor to Turner/PCL/Flatiron Joint Venture, the contracting team for The Green Build. The bid package was part of  Contract 1, which includes 10 new gates at Terminal 2 West, expanded dining and shopping options, and other terminal and airfield improvements.

Jess’ job was to remove, intact, several large pieces of glass on the west end of Terminal 2 West and install temporary partitions. To avoid any impact to SDIA passengers, work was conducted from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Jess also had to remove one of the airport’s largest art pieces, Sunlight Juxtaposed, a giant glass mosaic by Joan Irving. The art has been safely stored away and will return in 2013. Right now, if you head up the escalator to the TSA security lanes at the west end of Terminal 2 West, you’ll barely notice the huge partition now in place in the west wall.

Contract 1’s Project Director, Dan McGuckin, and Security Director, Scott MacDonald, both say Jess was a great team player, “working conscientiously and going the extra step.”  He ensured that not just the art was kept safe, but that his crew went home safely at the end of each shift.

Jess plans to bid on more work – and both Turner/PCL/Flatiron and the Airport Authority hope he does!

To get a closer look at Jess’ work, check out the cool time-lapse video above.

The British Are Coming!

Nonstop flights between San Diego and Europe. How does that sound?

British Airways announced today that, in cooperation with American Airlines, nonstop service between San Diego International Airport and London Heathrow Airport will start June 1, 2011.

The announcement was made moments ago at a special news conference at Airport Authority headquarters attended by San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, Airport Authority Board Chair Robert Gleason, Airport Authority President/CEO Thella Bowens, and representatives from British Airways and American Airlines.

British Airways, American Airlines and Iberia Airlines recently formed a new partnership, and today’s news is part of a growth strategy resulting from that partnership.

Airport Authority analysis shows there is a significant untapped market of people – from the business and leisure sectors – eager to take advantage of nonstop service between San Diego and London. The new service will be aboard British Airways Boeing 777 aircraft, seven days a week. Passengers may book the flights through British Airways or American Airlines and accumulate miles in either airline’s frequent flier program.

For more information, read the news release.
